Second Annual Tri-County Save Haiti Bike Ride:
Honor. Remember. Unite
The Haitian community and friends of Haiti mobilize for Haiti. Local officials, nonprofit organizations, student organizations, and volunteers all throughout South Florida are teaming up again to commemorate the 2nd anniversary of the earthquake tragedy and to galvanize support towards supporting reconstruction efforts in Haiti.
On January 14, 2012 Salusa Basquin, an educator and long time member of the Haitian Community in South Florida will be joined by State Representative Mack Bernard, North Miami Mayor Andre Pierre, community leaders and many others for the second annual Tri-County Save Haiti Bike Ride, a community ride to commemorate the devastating earthquake in Haiti that took more than 250,000 lives and left the country in ruins. "January 12, 2010 is a day we should never forget" said State Representative Mack Bernard.
The biking tour will begin at 6:00AM at City Hall in Lake Park with a word from the Mayor James DuBois and a mile walk in memory of late Lake Park's Mayor, Desca DuBois, a great friend of our community who passed away in April of last year. The bikers will then proceed to West Palm Beach City Hall to pick up a proclamation by the city's Mayor (Arrival time 7:30AM). Thereafter, bikers will head to the city of Lake Worth, at City Hall to meet up with Mayor Triolo, other local officials, supporters and community leaders for a commemoration ceremony (Arrival time 8:30AM). Their next stop will be in the City of Delray Beach at PKliz Restaurant & Lounge (Arrival time 10:45AM) to meet with young Haitian-American business owner, Frantz Jerome who will join the bikers after providing them with refreshments and a little taste of Haitian cuisine.
Bikers will then continue their journey south to Oakland Park at the Jaco Pastorious Park, where they will form the unity circle and a symbolic reading of 112 names of victims from the earthquake (Arrival time 12:45PM). The names are from www.112haiti.com, a digital memorial wall created after the earthquake to honor the dead. Our next stop will be at the City Hall of North Miami (Arrival time 3:45PM) where we will be joined with more bikers from Mayor's Andre Pierre's Monthly Community Bike Ride and the Mayor himself and head to the Little Haiti Culture Center (Arrival time 4:45PM) where we will be met with local officials, community leaders and others to unite in music with upcoming Haitian musicians offering the rhythm of Haiti and setting the tone for a year of progress for the country. This year's "Unity Message" will be delivered by young Haitian-American student Jessica Donette
We are inviting everyone, bicycling or non-bicycling friends to take part in this movement to HONOR the many brave men and women who are continuing to fight for a better life in Haiti, to REMEMBER those who lost their lives during the tragic earthquake and those who are still destitute awaiting help and to UNITE with the many around the world who vow not to rest until we see a better Haiti. Registration is free, all that is required to ride is a "Unity T-shirt" that can be purchased online www.colorofhope.org/Spirit_0f_Solidarity_with_Haiti.html or at any one of the pitt stops. All Donations Benefit the “Light Up Haiti initiative” an initiative aimed at raising awareness around Haiti's energy crisis and providing solar lights to students in Haiti to enable them to study at night.
